Gomersal & Cleckheaton started the game slowly and it was Tingley who got into their stride early and were making the most of the space across the midfield to work the channels. Eager Tingley runners were causing the Gomersal defence some discomfort, but they held firm leaving Tingley nothing other than speculative shots, which Freddie Hirst kn the Gomersal and Cleckheaton goal dealt with little fuss.
Gomersal started to get into the game and with one of the first real attacks won a free kick around 25 yards from goal. Up stepped Harry Hutchinson with what was a speculative strike on goal, however a fortunate bounce before the Tingley goalkeeper forced a parry, and the alive Louis Hammond rammed the ball home as all good forwards do, which sparked delirious celebrations between the players and their age group teammates and friends who were making all the noise in the stands.
Gomersal and Argentina then fashioned another close attempt when Thomas Wallbank latched onto a ball on the edge of the area, smashing the crossbar in what would have been a fantastic goal.
Tingley continued to be on the front foot and can consider themselves unlucky to have gone in at half time 1-0 behind.
The 2nd half started as the first half finished, with Tingley again looking the more likely to score and whilst Hamza Chibbda continued to work hard up front, Gomersal and Cleckheaton were struggling to build some momentum going forward.
However, Gomersal and Cleckheaton stayed calm, with the defensive midfield duo of Oscar Cooper and Cooper Jackson proving tenacious in the tackle and proving a solid low block cover with the tight defensive unit of Callum Newbon, Harry Hutchinson, Josh Thompson and Captain Issac Marsh repelling any attacks that got through.
With 50 minutes on the clock the momentum started to turn with the forwards and creative midfielders in the Gomersal and Cleckheaton ranks started to get on the ball. Callum Newbon and Isaac Marsh started to get forward and effect the game in the opposition half and Thomas Wallbank was causing havoc down the right and through the middle, with a couple of mazy runs, leading to chances and near misses by Cole Bywood and Isaac Marsh.
Tommy Wood and Dexter Boon were proving themselves a thorn in the side of Tingley, raiding down the left and right, with Louis Hammond getting more on the ball and looking to pull strings and knit things together.
As the game wore on Cole Bywood started to pick up more space, and the passes through the lines came as a result.
Gomersal and Cleckheaton were starting to tick and the crowd were beginning to buzz with excitement and expectation. Another strong run from Thomas Wallbank saw him cut in from the right hand side, unleash a blistering shot toward the far corner which the goalkeeper somehow got finger tips to, but that was not enough as Hamzah Chhibda stole in at the far post to make sure and grab the second and decisive goal.
The game wasn’t over yet as Cole Bywood mustered the energy to beat 3 players from the halfway line and force another save from the Tingley goalkeeper and as the game was reaching the dying embers, one last foray from Tingley drew a fantastic save from Freddie Hirst in the Gomersal and Cleckheaton goal, with the rebound expertly turned away to safety by the ever alert Issac Marsh.
As the final whistle blew, for a deserved victory for Gomersal and Cleckheaton, the noisy travelling support invaded the pitch to celebrate with their teammates and friends, who left the field to rapturous applause from their friends and family.
An outstanding effort from all the players and coaches and a big thank you to all the family, friends and team mates who came out to support the lads.
