After more than three decades of dedicated service to Gomersal and Cleckheaton, Chairman Mick Binks has announced that he is stepping down from the role, bringing to a close six years as Chairman and an extraordinary 35-year journey with the club.

In a heartfelt address to members, Mick reflected on the impact the club has had on his life, saying:

"Football has only ever been part of the story."

During his time at Gomersal and Cleckheaton, Mick has served as a coach and age-group manager on five separate occasions, Club Secretary for more than 25 years and, most recently, Chairman. Beyond the roles he has held, he spoke warmly about the lifelong friendships the club has given him.

"This club has given me friendships that will last a lifetime... Quite simply, Gomersal and Cleckheaton has shaped my life in more ways than I could ever have imagined. It's where I met my best mate, Alan Dearden, and, most importantly, where I met my wife, Sandra, 27 years ago while running one of our age groups.."

Mick said he is stepping down knowing the club is in a strong position, paying tribute to Vice Chairmen Chris Marsden and Nathan Page for their vision and leadership.

"Chris and Nathan have poured their heart and soul into moving Gomersal forward... Every club needs fresh ideas, fresh energy and people prepared to take it to the next level."

He also recognised the volunteers who have been the foundation of the club's success, giving special thanks to former Treasurer David Smith.

"Every success this club has enjoyed has been built on people giving up their evenings, weekends and family time because they care about Gomersal. I'd like to make special mention of my old mate David Smith, whose careful eye on the finances made sure we could dream big, while keeping our feet firmly on the ground."

Although leaving the Chairman's role, Mick made it clear that he won't be leaving the club. He will continue supporting the disability team, coaching with the Under-14 Girls, running the Tots group and carrying on as the club's self-appointed chief scout.

Looking back on the generations of players he has helped, Mick reflected on what Gomersal has always meant to him.

"People often say that football is about winning trophies. Of course that's nice, but for me, Gomersal has always been about people."

He added that seeing children grow in confidence, build friendships and develop as young people has been one of the greatest rewards of his life.

Concluding his address, Mick thanked everyone who has been part of his journey and expressed his confidence in the club's future.

"It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to serve as Chairman of this wonderful club."

And with a message that perfectly summed up his commitment to Gomersal, he said:

"While I'm stepping down as Chairman, I'll never stop being one of Gomersal's biggest supporters."

Everyone at Gomersal AFC thanks Mick for his outstanding commitment, leadership and friendship over the past 35 years. His contribution to the club is immeasurable, and we are delighted that he will remain an active part of the Gomersal family for many years to come.
