On a red hot day with a dry bumpy pitch, playing conditions were difficult, but a strong second half showing lots of character, energy, and desire were enough for Gomersal and Cleckheaton to claim the victory.
Gomersal & Cleckheaton took the lead after 4 minutes with their first real attack. A ball broke at the edge of Crossley's box and Joseph Smith fed a pass to Travis Barnett-Shafi on the right hand side of the penalty area, and he showed great close control before firing a right fight shot across the keeper into the far top corner.
In the early stages of the game, Crossley adapted better to the conditions and won numerous corners, and it was from one of these corners that they equalised after 15mins. Gomersal and Cleckheaton didn't deal with the corner, and with the ball bouncing around, Crossley fired in the equaliser.
After conceding the goal Gomersal and Cleckheaton battled their way back into the game and looked dangerous when getting in behind the Crossley defence and regained the lead 5 minutes before half time when a loose bouncing ball at the edge of the Crossley Box was beautifully hit on the turn again by Travis Barnett-Shafi high into the Crossley net.
A hard fought second half was played out with Gomersal & Cleckheaton restricting Crossley to long range shots that were comfortably dealt with the calm Arthur Bedford in goal and a long range free kick which clipped the top of the Gomersal and Cleckheaton crossbar.
The big moment of the second half arrived 5 minutes before the final whistle. After a half of nearly moments, Jude Beal picked up the ball on the left-hand side of the Crossley penalty area and drove at the defence, going past a couple of defenders to get to the byline before cutting the ball back to Tom Lingard in the 6 yard box who unselfishly squared the ball across to Theo Oldroyd to tap into an empty net.
Gomersal and Cleckheaton held out in the closing stages, and the final whistle was met by a pitch invision from the players from the Argentina and Croatia Gomersal & Cleckheaton teams!!
Captain and League representative player of the match Cooper Jackson lifted the cup for Gomersal after leading the defence superbly alongside Charlie Sugden, Ellis Mitchell, Jacob Carruthers and keeper Arthur Bedford. The hard-working midfield pair of Joseph Smith and Theo Oldroyd were well supported by Layton Carter-Hill, Jude Beal, and two goal Travis Barnett-Shafi and Tom Lingard led the forward line with countless unselfish running and pressing of the Crossley defence.
