Few people embody the spirit of Gomersal & Cleckheaton FC quite like Dan Porritt.

As both the club's Communications Officer and an Under 12s Coach, Dan has been at the heart of the club for well over a decade, helping hundreds of young players enjoy football, develop their skills and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Dan's journey began when his eldest son wanted to start playing football. With the age group in need of volunteers, he stepped forward to help coach the team. What started as a helping hand soon became a 10-year commitment, guiding a group of players all the way from Under 6s to Under 16s.

Now, with his younger son playing for the club, Dan is back on the touchline doing what he loves most.

"I've been lucky enough to do it twice," said Dan. "Seeing young players grow, both on and off the pitch, is incredibly rewarding."

Alongside planning and delivering training sessions and managing matchdays for the Under 12s, Dan also plays a key role in keeping everyone connected through the club's social media channels, sharing news, celebrating successes and promoting everything that makes Gomersal & Cleckheaton special.

Building More Than Just Football Teams
Ask Dan what he enjoys most about being involved with the club and the answer is immediate: the people.

"The feeling of togetherness is incredible. The committee and volunteers share a real vision to keep developing the club and create something special for the whole community."

That vision has helped the club continue to grow year after year, with around 500 players now wearing the Gomersal & Cleckheaton badge.

For Dan, however, success isn't measured solely in trophies or league tables.

"The most rewarding part is giving children the opportunity to play football, enjoy themselves and improve. Seeing their confidence grow makes all the hard work worthwhile."

A Decade to Remember
Reflecting on his proudest moments, Dan points to the remarkable journey he shared with his first team.

"Coaching the same group of players for 10 years was a huge achievement. Watching them grow from six-year-olds into young adults was something I'll always be proud of."

There were plenty of memorable moments along the way too, including the team lifting the Drighlington Gala Trophy three years running. But for Dan, the real success was seeing so many players stay together throughout the journey and continue enjoying their football.

The Power of Volunteers
Dan is passionate about the role volunteers play in grassroots football and believes they are the foundation of every successful club.

"Without volunteers, there wouldn't be a club. It really is that simple."

As the club continues to grow, he hopes more people will come forward to get involved.

"Don't worry about whether you have the time or the experience. Just get involved. Anything you can do to help is appreciated, and the support network at this club is fantastic."

Keeping Grassroots Football Special
Looking ahead, Dan has one wish for the game he loves.

"I'd like grassroots football to stay true to what it is. Football can be too business-like at times, but grassroots football should be about kids having fun with their mates."
