Gomersal travelled to last years Premier Division Champions Beeston St Anthony's on Saturday 14th September.
Always a difficult place to go for any team in this league Gomersal knew they would be up against it. Especially coming off the back of Wednesday's disappointment of letting a 3-0 lead slip away.
Much like Wednesday though Gomersal started the game like a house on fire. We were ahead within 2 minutes through the returning Josh Carney, what a start!
In the 10th minute Beeston broke away down the right hand side and equalised to make it 1-1.
From the restart each team were going at each other, looking to release their attacking players. Both sides had opportunities to take the lead, it looked most likely that the goal would come from a corner with both teams racking them up and almost scoring if it was not for some resolute defending.
On the 30th minute Jonny Irving picked the ball up just outside the Beeston box on the left hand side, he danced away from the fullback and went to beat the centre back at the byline, knocking the ball around him, the centre half dived in to take away Jonny's legs, Penalty!
Up stepped Ben Smith, BOOOOOM! a driven finish into the top corner! 1-2 Gomersal.
Gomersal held the lead up until half time.
The second half started and much like the first half both teams were aggressive. The Beeston management made some substitutes, bringing on more attacking players. From this Beeston started to mount some pressure on the Gomersal defence and managed to equalize again in the 82nd minute.
This goal seemed to rally Gomersal again, through determination the lads looked like they would not be denied a victory this week. From the restart Gomersal went straight on the offensive driving at the Beeston back line.
Only one minute on from the equaliser for Beeston, Gomersal were in the lead once more! Jonny Irving perfectly caught a half volley which he smashed into the top right hand corner across the keeper! surely that had to be the winner.
For the remainder of the game it was game management for Gomersal, the Referee added an additional 5 minutes and Beeston through everything but the kitchen sink at the Gomersal defence. But it was to be 3 points for the lads in red and black as they held out to beat last years Champions on their own patch. A great result.
Jonny Irving was voted Man of the Match, with an exceptional Centre Forward's performance, creating chances, linking the play and scoring the winner. Jonny is sponsored by LDS - Glazing & Joinery.
Gomersal have a break from League action in the next game as they face locals Dewsbury Moor in the district Cup.
