“A team performance - stronger together”
With little football played in the past six weeks it was great to finally get out on the grass and play a match. We’ve spent a lot of time talking about the need to control the ball and use the body to protect and buy time
and we were delighted with how this was happening from the first whistle against the Division 5 league leaders.
Gomersal started brightly and had Littletown on the back foot with some good play down the left side as Erin was able to pick up the ball and playe some excellent forward passes into dangerous areas, but unfortunately these didn’t materialise into any shots at goal and Littletown grew into the game. The away side created a number of good chances but Baz was switched on and waiting, beating the ball away as it was fired in with venom from one of the division’s top strikers.
When Littletown took the lead Baz had already tipped a shot onto the bar but the rebound was unfavourable and Gomersal found themselves behind. The attacking play down the left side persisted with Libbie throwing herself into tackles in the middle of the park to start the plays off and when Myla was put through on 18 minutes she provided a killer finish hard and low into the bottom corner! 1-1 and it was game on! The remainder of the half was fairly contested, but as half time was approaching a Littletown corner was delivered perfectly into the near post and a second invitation wasn’t needed as the away side tapped in to restore their lead. 1-2 HT.
The girls started the second half as they had done the first and with Brooke switching back to midfield she found her passing range early and created some great chances for her team mates but getting a clean strike at goal was not easy to come by. Another attack, this time from the Right fell favourably in the area but a slip from Myla in the muddy goal mouth prevented her from getting the connection she needed and denied a second - as a spectator it was a brilliant spell of attacking football.
A Free kick 20 yards from goal did give Gomersal a clean strike and Amelie delivered a power shot that went just wide of the post. Littletown rode their luck and must have been relieved when they scored a third midway through the half with a power strike leaving the keeper no chance. The away side pushed for another after this and Baz was again right up to task pulling of a string of good saves including a “kneel block” and a great diving save low to her right to keep her team in touching distance. Of note was a tremendous ball carry from Edith down the right wing, picking the ball up midway inside her own half and went the remainder of the pitch to create a chance. Both Amelie and Beatrix were stepping higher up the pitch in the latter stages making interceptions and keeping the pressure on.
The 4th and 5th Littletown goals had no bearing on the result and shouldn’t take the shine off what was one of the best performances this season. Everyone should feel proud of themselves after today. Congratulations to Amelie and Baz who were both exceptional today and fully deserving of their accolades. Final mention to Libbie who seems to take pleasure in making (and very often winning) huge tackles in midfield which gives the team strength and stability. In addition today she was looking up and making more passes than she ever has before showing a new side to her game that didn’t go unnoticed!
Finally we’ll meet up for training on Tuesday and probably get some shooting drills set up. We are looking to confirm some friendly fixtures in the coming weeks as we currently only have 2 games scheduled in the next 5 weeks.
